Just a Spot of Wine (GIS 3015/3015L- Cartographic Skills)

In this week, we were tasked with creating a choropleth map of European population along with wine consumption for those countries.

The population data was classified under quantile, since this allowed for the best distribution between the class breaks and allowed for better variation of color for the countries. Also, given that the wine consumption data is already classed under liter to capita, I chose to use graduated symbols. This also made for easier interpretation of the legend and symbols since the proportional symbols did not allow for distinct variation in size.

This map was drafted with a mix of ArcMap and Adobe Illustrator. AI is especially useful when it comes to labeling and relocating symbols for easier interpretation.

I must say, this assignment was tough. I contracted the flu which made everything this week more difficult. Overall, I think the map turned out well, given the circumstances. Another module down and we are now half way there!
