Looking For A Home (GIS 4048- Applications in GIS)

For this lab, we were given a scenario of a working couple who recently took new positions in Gainesville, FL. This couple is seeking a new residence and it was our job to assist in this. There was, however, criteria that needed to be met. The criteria was as follows:
1. Near the University of Florida.
2. Near the North Florida Regional Medical Center.
3. A neighborhood with residents between the ages of 40 to 49.
4. Neighborhood with a majority of homeowners as opposed to renters.

For the first map, separate raster datasets were created for each criteria. Since the first two criteria deal with distance, the Euclidean Distance tool was used for this analysis. The neighborhood requirement was accomplished utilizing the Feature to raster conversion tool. All rasters were reclassified in order to create a suitability index.

The second map utilized the Weighted Overlay tool, which was put to use in a custom Model Builder model. The various criteria could then be weighed and presented. The first was of equal weight, where every variable was set to 25%. The second gave more weight to the hospital and school at 35%, while the remaining two were set at 15%, respectively. The second analysis also had a change in scale factor, to further narrow the results.
